Sandy Graham was born on January 28, 1960 and grew up to be an English teacher and florist. In the ’80s, she met Drake’s father at a club called Club Bluenote. They welcomed Drake in Toronto on October 24, 1986, but separated when the rapper was five years old. As a single mother, Sandy struggled financially to raise Drake. She also suffered from osteoporosis and joint pain that kept her bedridden for most of Drake’s childhood.

“Everyone thinks I went to private school and my family is rich. Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I don’t talk about it enough, but I didn’t grow up happily,” Drake told complicated. “My family is not happy. My mother is very sick. We are poor, like bankrupt.”

Despite all the difficulties, Drake has an unconditional love for Sandy, often paying tribute to her in his songs and interviews. “My mom is an amazing woman,” he gushed The Hollywood Reporter. “She always told me, ‘You know, no matter what you want to do, no matter what you end up being, I will always love you. I will always support you.'”

Dennis Graham

Drake must have gotten some musical talent from his father, Dennis Grahamas a Memphis native used to Jerry Lee Lewis. After Dennis broke up with Sandy, Drake claimed he was a bit absent from his father. However, Dennis has previously said his son was using the excuse to sell records, which Drake dismissed, saying on Instagram: “My dad would say anything to anyone who would listen to him.”

Despite the back-and-forth and quasi-estrangement, the two appear to be back on good terms. On his song “From Time,” Drake sings, “I’ve been dealing with my dad talking about impatience/Just me and my old man going back to basics/We’ve been talking about the future and the time we’ve wasted.”

The pair have been very close lately, with Drake getting a bit of a drag on his pop when it came to Dennis tattooing his son’s face in 2017. In August, Drake made a joke about body art portraits on his Instagram. “@TheRealDennisG I’m just sitting here thinking why are you doing this to me, our family,” Drake wrote in the caption of his Instagram post, which shows the tattoo. Dennis responded by claiming he had a whole bunch of tattoo artists trying to bring it to snuff. “Hahaha, I have 16 people trying to fix this and they hurt me,” he replied, before sweetly adding, “I love you… miss you”.
