  • The billionaire detailed the elaborate parties he throws at his mansion in a podcast interview.

  • Musk sold the mansion last year as part of his plan to unload the property to fund the colonization of Mars.

Elon Musk joked that he once lived in a “haunted house” and recalled an elaborate party he threw on a podcast in early August.

In the interview, Musk compared his former Bay Area home to the one in The Shining.

“This is the creepiest house I’ve ever lived in,” Musk said, citing instances in which he heard “weird noises” and doors seemed to open and close automatically.

“I haven’t seen any actual evidence of ghosts, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be scared late at night,” Musk joked on the podcast.

“Parties are usually of high production value,” Musk said, noting that he prides himself on the elaborate sets and live-action performers at the party.

During the Gatsby party, Musk said they were forced to turn off the music after local police were called to shut down the party at least four times.

The billionaire joked that his party angered his neighbors in Hillsboro, Calif., where the average home price is more than $5.6 million and “everyone goes to bed around 10 p.m.,” he said.

Musk said he also threw a party themed around the video game Castlevania at the mansion.

The billionaire has been known to throw intricate parties. Musk has said he opened a nightclub in a college sorority house in the 90s to help pay for rent and college.

Earlier this year, the Tesla CEO threw a “cyber rodeo” party to showcase the automaker’s new Texas factory for the first time. The event featured drone displays, twinkling exploding cacti and Teslas hanging from the ceiling. The year before, he threw a 9,000-person rave at Tesla’s Berlin factory.

During the podcast, Musk admitted that he has been hosting private parties for at least three years, largely due to the pandemic.

Musk’s San Francisco residence was the last house he sold last year as he vowed to sell all of his possessions to fund a colony on Mars. The billionaire made about $130 million after selling his massive real estate portfolio.

Since then, Musk said he lives in a “very small” three-bedroom house in South Texas worth about $45,000.
