Emeryville Food and Retail Update: Public Market, Bay Street and Other July Openings/Closings

Some important food and retail updates in and around Emeryville since we posted Last update in June. Emeryville appears to be in the midst of a post-pandemic business recovery, led by a revitalized Bay Street Emeryville, with a flurry of new tenant announcements.

There were also events in other areas of the city, including the Public Market, the Hollis Corridor and Oakland’s Golden Gate neighborhood.

Gobi Mongolian BBQ – Open

A long-vacant space in the Parc on Powell apartment complex has been filled.Gobi Mongolian Grill opens near Ike’s Sandwiches on Hollis Street following lease last october. Gobi quietly “trial operation” last week.

Gobi offers Mongolian BBQ “bowls” that can be customized with a variety of meats, vegetables and noodles.Gobi has four Current location in the Bay Area Including Sunnyvale, San Jose, Pleasanton and Foster City.

Open Market Update

Naru Sushi – Open

Sushi is back at the public market after Lost We Sushi stall in 2019. Naru Sushi opens near C Casa after signing lease back in March.

Naru and Naru are run by the same family NabiQ Korean Stalls (and “Sorabol” before the renovation of the public market).

Naru Sushi offers sushi, bento boxes and rice bowls.They are open daily from 11am to 8pm Available to order online.

Calypso Rose Kitchen – opening soon

Calypso Rose Kitchen booth opened (ex mother rummy space) is expected any day now.

Calypso chef Verna McGowan will soon bring her extensive culinary experience, including time as a personal chef Alice Walker Purple Book Fame, for Emeryville.

Calypso will offer a mix of Caribbean and Puerto Rican dishes, including Guayanese pepperpot, Roti, sopa de pollo, arroz con pollo and black bean soup.

CorePower Yoga – Coming Soon

Core Power Yoga will take over the vacant space between Guitar Center and Urban Outfitters.

Founded in 2002, this Denver-based yoga studio chain is the largest yoga studio chain in the United States with more than 200 studios.

Core Power already has locations in neighboring Oakland and Berkeley.

Pig in Kimchi – Temporarily closed / reopening soon

Pig in a Pickle has been closed since May 15 due to staff departures. Their location in Corte Madera has remained open.

Pig in a Pickle owner Damon Stainbrook reiterated the many challenges foodservice businesses are going through, including staff shortages and skyrocketing meat prices. “We lost too many employees, and May to July was our busiest time in Marin, so I pulled the rest of my full-time staff there to work.”

Stainbrook expects to reopen their Emeryville location on August 5 and return to full-time work within a few weeks. “The staffing looks better now because I’m getting a lot more applicants than last year. Meat prices are ridiculous, but that won’t change anytime soon.”

Bay Street Update:

Bay Street continues to soar New Retail Announcement praise its transformation “Bay Rest” restaurant terrace and plan new grocery store.

LoveSac – opening soon

LoveSac announces they are opening their Bay Street showroom. LoveSac manufactures and sells bean bags and modular furniture systems they call “Sactionals” that can be easily reconfigured and feature removable, washable covers.

Their LoveSac “bean” bags are filled with a proprietary foam blend.

LoveSac is scheduled to open this summer.

Fashion Q – On

Fashion Q It opened its doors to the public earlier this month (former Forever 21 space).

Fashion Q is a women’s clothing retailer that sells a wide range of tops, jeans and accessories. They also offer a huge selection of prom and formal dresses as well as kid-sized tuxedos.

Purple Mattress – On

Purple Mattress store opens in former Brandy Melville space last month.

Purple designs and manufactures “comfort products” including mattresses, pillows, seat cushions, bed frames, sheets and more.

Sandbox VR – Open

Sandbox VR (Virtual Reality) opens doors in the former asshole Space July 22.

Sandbox VR is an immersive VR experience that uses Hollywood-grade motion capture cameras, 3D-accurate body trackers, and a haptic suit.

The Bay Street Emeryville location features four private rooms for VR gaming, called “holodecks,” and offers six unique immersive worlds, including zombies, haunted houses, and Star Trek themes.

Solé Salon – Moving to Oakland

Longtime Bay Street tenant Solé Salon has closed their Emeryville branch and moved their salon to Auckland. Their new location is on Valdez Street near Lake Merritt.

Coming soon: Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters Announces Opening of Bay Street Store (Home of Former Apple Store) their expansion).

It seems unlikely they will operate two stores in such close proximity, with speculation they will close their public market locations.

The original public market redevelopment plan included additional retail space and housing units to complement their plans for a new season market grocery anchor.Market conditions and sales in the market turn the project into more Life Sciences Emphasis.

Café Colucci/Brundo Spice Company to former Soul Slice space

North Auckland to get a new Ethiopian cafe in the former Noodle theory stipulates Space on San Pablo Avenue.space is temporarily occupied soul slice The pizzeria that closed abruptly about four months ago.

The space will accommodate both Cafe Colucci and brendor spice co. They have been operating in Auckland’s Temescal community for 31 years.

“We’re excited to make this change in location as it means we’ll have room to stretch out a bit more to showcase the Brudo Spice Company store and provide our customers with the best dining experience!”

Los Moles – Temporarily closed / reopening soon

Loyal readers pointed out that the popular Los Moles Mexican restaurant temporarily closed their Emeryville location in early June. Their other locations, including El Cerrito and San Rafael, remain open.

We’ve reached out to Los Moles chef/owner Lito Saldaña, who assured us they’ll be reopening in the first week of August.
