The critically acclaimed Broadway musical The Purple is officially getting the movie music treatment! BroadwayWorld gathers all the information about upcoming movies – including who’s starring, which characters haven’t been cast, and what’s changing from stage to screen.
This story depicts the lives and relationships of an African-American family in Georgia in the early 20th century. The musical features jazz, ragtime, gospel, blues and African rhythms, a book by Martha Norman, and music by Brenda Russell, Allie Willis and Stephen Bray. It premiered on Broadway in 2005; the 2016 revival won Tony for actress Cynthia Erivo and best musical revival.
The Purple is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name. It was originally adapted into a non-musical film in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and more.

Who is the cast of the “Purple” movie musical?
Fantasia Barrino will play Celie in the film. Danielle Brooks will reprise her Tony-nominated performance in the 2016 rerun of the musical “Sofia.” Taraji P. Henson will play Shug Avery.
The star-studded film also includes Corey Hawkins as Harpo, her as Squeak, and Colman Domingo as Mister. Singers Halle Bailey and Ciara will share the role of Celie’s beloved sister Nettie, with Bailey playing the younger version of the character and Ciara playing the older version.
Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis will play Celie and Nettie’s mother, a new role not included in the musical.
Elizabeth Marvel plays Miss Millie, another new role in the film, the unhappy wife of the mayor who hires Sophia as her maid.
Grammy winner Jon Batiste will make his film debut as pianist Grady, husband of Sugar Avery (Henson).
The cast consists of Louis Gossett, Jr. will play the role of Old Mr. David Alan Grier will play Reverend Avery, Tammy Tamela J. Mann will play First Lady, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi will play Young Celie, Deon Cole ) will play Alfonso and Stephen Hill will play the role of Buster.
Recently, Terrence J. Smith and Tiffany Elle Burgess joined the cast to play Adam and Olivia, respectively. Aba Arthur also joined the cast, but did not name a role.

What character hasn’t been cast in the “Purple” movie?
It appears that all of the main characters in the “Purple” movie have been confirmed, but new ones — including those played by Aunjanue Ellis, Elizabeth Marvel, David Alan Grier, Tamela J. Mann and Deon Cole — have been added to the roster.
The musical features the Ladies of the Church, three women who serve as the Greek choir in the story. The roles have not been specifically announced.
Who is directing the purple movie?
Blitz Bazawule is directing the new film. Bazawule is best known for directing Beyonce’s feature film Black Is KING on Disney+.
Producer Oprah Winfrey revealed to Deadline that she was “overwhelmed by Blitz’s unique vision as a director” and looks forward to seeing how he brings the next evolution of the story to life.

Also, Nettie in the movie will be played by two actors, unlike the musical version. The new film will feature Halle Bailey as a young Nettie and Ciara as an older character.
Additionally, she may work with the film’s writers on a new song for her character, Squeak.
When will filming start?
The Purple Music movie is currently filming in Georgia.
“The set was hard, the set was fun, the set was emotional, it was cold, it was hot,” Fantasia Barrino recently told Entertainment Tonight. “Some of the places we’re shooting are heavy because we actually have slave homes that have been behind us for years. We can feel our ancestry. So it’s heavy.”
The Purple movie is slated for a 2023 release.
