Fantasia Shares Sweet Birthday Surprise From ‘Purple’ Actor and LeAndrea Johnson
Happy Birthday, Fantasia!The singer turned 38 on Thursday and shared the sweetest birthday surprise she received while filming Purple with her followers on Instagram.
Explains that she is still working on the film adaptation of the Broadway musical directed by Blitz Bazawule for another eight days, 2004 American idol The winner shared that her cast, family and friends made a “special birthday video” for her and invited her close friend Grammy winner LeAndrea Johnson to visit her on set.
In a video posted to Fantasia’s page, Johnson sneaks behind a crew member and begins singing an affectionate “Happy Birthday” to her close friend. The birthday girl was immediately overwhelmed and in tears as Johnson sang to her, before the two hugged passionately at the end of the song.
“I’m still on set shooting ‘The Color Purple’ musical film adaptation for 8 working days and this is by far the best and most needed birthday surprise my sister @leandriaj,” Fantasia captioned the video post. “My cast, family, friends and the entire Color Purple cast made a special birthday video for me (coming soon). It gave me the boost I needed to make this journey as Celie again.”
She added: “I put blood, sweat and tears into this role, through many long nights, early mornings, sacrifices and pushing myself to new limits. I can’t wait for the world to see this Fantasia. I want to thank you all Birthday wishes, gifts, calls, texts, posts, videos, etc. Special thanks to my amazing team. 💜💜💜 I love you all! 💜💜💜 Lele I love you to the moon and back. Fantasia’s comments were filled with fans and friends wishing her a happy birthday, including co-star Taraji P. Henson, real housewives of atlanta Stars Kandi Burruss, Robert Glasper and Da Brat. Grammy winner Jazmine Sullivan also showed some love for the Broadway actress, sharing best wishes for her special day, adding that she “can’t wait to see you kill the character.”
PurpleFilming began in March in Georgia with Steven Spielberg and Winfrey. Spielberg directed the 1985 film of the same name starring Winfrey.
Fantasia reprised the role of Celie, who made her Broadway debut in 2007. Joining her as Danielle Brooks as Sofia, the star-studded cast includes Henson as Shug Avery, Domingo as Mister, Mpasi as Young Celie, Corey Hawkins as Harpo, HER as Squeak, Louis Gossett Jr. as Ol’ Mister, and David Alan Grier as Reverend Avery, Tamela J. Mann as First Lady, Halle Bailey as Young Nettie, Ciara as Adult Nettie, Deon Cole as Alfonso and Stephen Hill as Buster.
Back in April, ET spoke with Fantasia about revisiting Celie and Sofia’s story, and admitted she nearly shut the opportunity. And her personal and professional experiences during her 2006-2007 Broadway musical appearances are pretty much to blame.
“My life was all over the place at the time,” Fantasia said of playing Celie on stage for nearly nine months. “So, it’s not fun to carry Celie’s weight and my weight. I remember in interviews and radio stations, when they asked me, I said, ‘Okay, I did it, but I’ll never do it again. .”
Enter Scott Sanders, one of PurpleThe producers of Fantasia called Fantasia about the role, but she had her answers ready.
“‘I can’t go back, I can’t do this again, Scott,'” Fantasia recalled telling Sanders. “He said, ‘Listen, I know where you are in your life right now. I see you’re married. I’m so proud of you, I’m so happy. But, no one else can do that. We need you here. do this.
Suffice to say, Fantasia, who won a Drama World Award for her Broadway performance, is now happy to have her on board.
“It would be absolutely amazing,” she said. “I’m glad I didn’t let that door close. I’ve discussed it with the whole family and everyone is saying, ‘I think you should do this.'”
on set PurpleSet for release in 2023, it’s also set off a roller coaster of emotions.
“It’s tough on set, it’s fun on set, it’s emotional on set, it’s cold, it’s hot,” she said. “I’ll say the same – some of the places we’re shooting are heavy because we literally have slave houses behind us for years. We can feel our ancestors. So, it’s heavy. But it’s It also reminds us that we know they paved the way for us. It also reminds us — as an all-black actor — that we want to push heaven for our ancestors and our generation today.”
