“Rich Dad Poor Dad” is told in fable form, showing two different views on money. One leads to wealth. The other didn’t. Although it was originally self-published, it was acquired by a publishing company and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for six years. It has been part of the lexicon of financial literacy for about a quarter of a century.

Since his famous book was first published in 1997, books, seminars and games bearing his name have dominated the world of self-help and finance. That same year, he founded Cashflow Technologies, Inc., a company he used to market his creations and incorporate them into the financial staple it has become.

Other Books and Efforts by Kiyosaki

What may not be known is that Rich Dad Poor Dad was not his first book. The questionable title of that article, “If you want to be rich and happy, don’t go to school,” encouraged people to consider real estate over traditional higher education.

He has written over 25 books, which have sold over 42 million copies worldwide. He even co-wrote a couple with former President Donald Trump that included “Why We Want You to Be Rich: Two Men, One Message.”

Speaking events and seminars helped him build his name and reputation. While he occasionally speaks to himself, other experts often guide the lessons in a franchise fashion. The cost of these workshops can range from free to thousands of dollars, depending on the scope.

While his work was popular, it was not without criticism. It was pointed out that his book does not offer practical tips on how to build wealth, but focuses more on general self-help philosophy.

Kiyosaki’s early life

Robert Toru Kiyosaki was born on April 8, 1947 in Hilo, Hawaii, to parents Marjorie and Dr. Ralph Kiyosaki. He is a fourth generation Japanese American. Over the years, he was very critical of his father’s time at school for his Ph.D., even though he himself nearly matched him in education over the years. In 1965, he graduated from high school and entered the Naval Academy.

In the early 1970s, he spent two years as a gunship pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps. After returning to the United States, he earned an MBA. His first foray into the business was as a sales associate at Xerox.

He tried to make a business for himself, selling nylon and Velcro “surf” purses with his brother. Rippers was the first company to market and it did well for a while but eventually went bankrupt. His next company in 1980, selling T-shirts, purses, hats and bags for heavy metal rock bands, suffered the same fate.

In 1980, Kiyosaki recalculated his course and started selling education. In 1985 he founded a business called the Learning Excellence Institute. The aim is to give students an understanding of the importance of integrating social responsibility with finances. Four years later, he sold the company.

Founded in 1997, Cashflow Technologies Inc. is a business and financial education company that owns and operates the Rich Dad and Cashflow brands.

Just a few years later, he published the book that made him famous: Rich Dad Poor Dad.

In 2012, his company “Rich Global LLC” lost nearly $24 million to The Learning Annex in a court judgment, and he faced bankruptcy again, according to Business Insider.

Where is his money invested?

Kiyosaki is currently using gold, silver and bitcoin to insulate his other investments from the current bear market. He’s still investing in oil wells — not companies — he explained in a recent article tweet.
