When a sequel to a series is released, fans usually expect the next story to get darker. This is especially true in anime, where fans often see continuations from when things get real. The protagonists now know what they are fighting for or what they are fighting for has been expanded to counter the antagonist’s goals.
However, some programs have to work in reverse. After continually showing just how serious things are, once their main story is done there’s nowhere left to go to get “more” serious without straying from the core of what the series did. In such cases, the next show in the franchise will often turn less serious in response, sometimes even light-hearted.
10/10 Dragon Ball Super Has Lowered The Stakes But Shocking Battles
dragon ball super started with lower stakes than Dragon Ball Z, with its opening arc featuring a “God of Destruction” that never actually destroyed anything. Since the first arc was based on Battle of the godsthe serious environment z she was known to have suddenly disappeared.
And while some bows are tighter than others, dragon ball super it just feels less dangerous than Dragon Ball Z ever did. Part of it is that there are simply too many powerful protagonists to credibly think that the heroes might lose. However, it is also valid to think that akira toriyama he’s just not as interested in telling stories like Frieza or the Android Sagas, where one loss meant the entire planet was destroyed.
9/10 Gundam ZZ starts with a fruit fight
the 1985 anime Zeta mobile suit Gundam is one of Tomino’s darker works. It begins with a teenager running from a tyrannical army who loses both parents in the first five episodes. Most of the main characters on the show are dead by the end, and even the hero is messed up by the end.
So naturally zz gundam it begins with Judau Ashta, the new main protagonist, having a fruit fight with one of the remaining survivors from the last series. Fans who finish the series know that zz gundam It eventually gets pretty dark, but the first half of the show is light-hearted, largely to balance out just how bleak z gundam end is.
8/10 Nanoha Vivid focuses on martial arts tournaments instead of saving the world
Nanoha StrikerS centers on the adventures of Nanoha Takamachi and her friends, a group of magicians who investigate dangerous incidents around the world and protect the universe from dangerous supernatural horrors and mad scientists alike. Forwards’ Sequel Series/Spinoff Series, Lyrical Magical Girl Nanoha ViViDfollows Nanoha’s adoptive daughter, Vivio Takamachi, a young woman with tremendous magical powers.

7/10 Boruto is nothing like its predecessors
By its very nature, boruto it was not going to be more serious than naruto shippuden. With a focus on Konoha’s youngest ninja, it’s hard to have the same scale of missions.. Nevertheless, boruto it’s a massive tone change even from the original naruto Serie.
Instead of focusing on the dangerous world of being a genin-class ninja, the first few episodes of boruto Focus on the protagonist having almost life adventures within the naruto world. It’s a fascinating change of pace; however, it’s also one that fans aren’t interested in at all. Even of boruto The Chunin Exam is less serious, and they are careful to make sure none of the younger ninja come to harm.
6/10 Tekkaman Blade II is more hopeful than the original series
The original tekkaman blade is a grim action series from the early ’90s. Takaya’s fight against Radam is a war not just for humanity, but for his very life, with each new transformation risking his life. The ending is decent, but it still ends with him losing more than he gained.
Tekkaman II Blade has a lot more fun with the idea, introducing more people who are capable of fighting to lighten the protagonist’s load. Even the ending is more light-hearted, with all the heroes surviving until the end of the story.
5/10 Digimon Frontier returns to the classic Shonen adventure
After Digimon tamers showed the DigiDestined merging with their fellow Digimon, there was only one idea left: the humans had to become the Digimon. And so it was with Digimon Frontierwhere the new group of kids transformed into different versions of heroes to save the world.
Weather Digimon Frontier he had a sense of danger and tension in his conflict, he could not compete with his predecessor. Digimon Tamers was designed as a “kid-friendly” version of Neon Genesis Evangelion, with darker themes present more than any series before or since. before that, Border He had to go back to his roots a bit. Digimon Frontier had amazing battlesthough.
4/10 Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL presents a hero who wanted to feel the flow
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5 D is easily one of the darker children’s shows of the 2000s. The protagonist lives in a broken city that was abandoned after a disaster partially destroyed it. He makes subtle references to class divisions and regularly features characters risking their lives in duels. And so Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL features the protagonist talking about “feeling the flow”.
This was not an accident, but more of a foil to give the kids a break from 5 D unrelenting dark tone. ZEXAL it’s an intentionally lighthearted and less serious show, with Yuma as the first legitimately awful Duelist to lead. The series turns more serious later on as more number monsters appear in the show and the bet goes up, but early ZEXAL he sees the show devolve into straight-up slapstick.
3/10 Dragon Ball GT turns Goku into a kid again

1/10 Transformers: Robots In Disguise brought humor back to Transformers
Transformers: Robots in Disguise it was the first time transformers returned to anime since Victory ended in the late 80s instead of Takara brave saga, an impersonator of transformers. For much of the 1990s, the focus was on shows like beast wars Y beast machines. But with robots in disguisethe series refocused on the anime and got much sillier in response.
