Notes from the Parkland School Massacre Scene

CNN staff

(CNN) — Building 1200 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been closed since the massacre on February 14, 2018.

Jurors in the sentencing phase of the school’s gunman’s trial walked past the undisturbed scene Thursday, with the victims’ blood still smearing classroom floors.

Bullet holes also marked the walls of a school in Parkland, Florida, where Nicolas Cruz killed 14 students and three staff.

More than four years after the victim’s body was taken away, a lock of black hair remained on the floor. Valentine’s Day gifts and cards were everywhere, and shards of glass crunched under visitors’ feet.

These are the disturbing notes of a group of reporters who were allowed into the building after jurors completed their drills.

level one

We entered from the east stairwell as did Cruz. In the stairwell where Cruz assembled his gun, there was a dirty white teddy bear and two small gift bags for Valentine’s Day.

In the stairwell where Cruz entered and assembled the gun, a white stuffed teddy bear lay dirty on the floor next to a bag containing a lover’s heart, possibly dropped by a fleeing student.

Everywhere you walk in the building there are shards of shattered safety glass that rattle loudly as you walk past them. They are especially loud and crunchy on the threshold of every door.

Room 1218

English class by Brittany Sinitch: No one was killed or injured here, but Cruz shot here. The textbook on the desk is open to the discussion of Mercutio. There’s a Valentine’s Day teddy bear on the table. On the wall hangs a 2017 Stoneman Douglas football poster – a photo of the team, which reads: Faith in Family Football. A pink note wishing a Happy Valentine’s Day was placed on the table next to student Sarah Lewis’ worksheet. On the table was a half-full clear plastic drink cup, the contents of which were now dark brown sludge. There’s a Valentine’s Day card on the table that says “I don’t just love you, I really, really love you.”

Room 1215

Study room led by Spanish teacher Juletta Matlock: Dried blood outside the door where Luke Hoyer, Martin Duque and Gina Montalto were killed. As soon as I entered the door, there were several earphones with long cables lying on the ground. To Kill a Mockingbird is still on the table. On the wall hangs a poster titled “Let’s Talk About It” with the basic Spanish words: Padre, Madre, Abuelo, Abuela. “On the other wall are posters of common Spanish phrases and colors.

Room 1213—— Ronit Reoven’s AP Psychology Course:

On the wall further from the door is a table with a large pool of blood on it. It was here that Carmen Schentrup died from a gunshot wound to the head. She and the children hid behind the teacher’s desk in the southeast corner of the classroom. The teacher’s desk phone lay on the floor in front of Maddie Wilford’s injured desk. On the wall behind the desk is what appears to be a photo of the teacher’s family and an 8 X 10 drawing of President Trump that reads “We Will Win What We Do.” On the north wall is a bulletin board with about two dozen wallet-sized photos of students. A lone white sneaker remains on the floor.

Corridor – HIXON website

Hickson took cover in a alcove in front of an elevator about 20 feet from the door after being shot through the west gate. Cruz shot him a second time as he passed, but he was still alive and spent about 10 minutes trying to get up, according to video played in court. There was a large smear of blood on the floor and wall. A black rubber shoe, possibly a crocodile, lay on the floor there.

Room 1214 – “The Holocaust Room” – Teacher Ivy Schamis’ room

She teaches Holocaust studies. This is where Nick DeVoret and Helena Ramsay died.

On the whiteboard is the hashtag #TogetherWeRemember. Eyewitness accounts are also mentioned. Two yellowed Sun Sentinel newspapers lay on the table with bullet marks on the table, the laptop was still on, the headphones and a water bottle were still on the table. On the floor is a thrown away plan for the 2017-2018 school year. Bloodstained from the deaths of DeVoret and Ramsay. “Tell Them We Remember” by Susan Bachrach and “Listen to the Wind” by Greg Mortenson are covered in their blood. There was a Holocaust sign on the notice board that said “We will never forget”. A table top has a white plug and earplugs.A quick way to indicate that everything unfolds

The learning objective on the board is “Understanding the world and its surroundings”.

Room 1216

No classroom has been killed and wounded like Dara Haas’s English class. There was also a blue folder on the desk with Alaina Petty’s name on it – just behind it – and between the teacher’s desk and the wall, there was a large smear of blood. Bullet holes in the wall.

Right next to the blood on the floor where Alyssa Alhadeff and Alaina Petty died – is a handwritten note about Malala Yousafzai – “The girl who wants to go to school” – and then reads “A bullet hit hit her in the head, but not her brain” ends with “In short, we the people should have the freedom to be educated.”

(Note: Malala is the Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban – she has been working hard to advocate education for girls and women).

Papers written by students are left on their desks and can never be retrieved. “We go to school every day of the week and we take it all for granted,” one student wrote. “We cry and whine, not knowing how lucky we are to learn.”

On the cabinet doors, the previous tasks are displayed. It displays headstones with student epitaphs.

“Rest in peace, it’s beautiful here.”

“RIP is a lot of fun here.”

“Rest in peace, it’s fine here.”

Next to a shoe on the ground is a pink Valentine’s stuffed toy and balloons.

The pool of blood looks aged, dark, clumpy, and flaky.

The table was covered with a thin layer of dust, and the landline phone fell to the ground.

On Alex Schachter’s desk – blood on the other side of the silver bar, connecting the plastic seat to the desk.

Near the west staircase — where Hickson was shot — there was a discarded shoe.

Second Floor – Corridor Quote

Quote on the corridor between rooms 1221 and 1229

third floor

Scott Beigel’s Classroom Room 1256:

Entering the corridor from the stairs on the east side, the first thing that catches your eye is a pool of blood clots much smaller than others. This is where Scott Berger’s body fell in front of classroom 1256. Unlike the other rooms, the window on his door was intact. Berger died when the door opened. His body blocked the closed door. The kids hiding in front of his room were vulnerable, but Cruz didn’t choose to enter.

The plastic world map is about the size of a placemat on most tables. Three wall clocks are placed face down by the door. On Berger’s desk is a worksheet comparing Christianity and Islam. Notes from the 2018 Winter Olympics medalists are written on a whiteboard. A deflated Valentine’s Day balloon lies on the ground.

Room 1255, Stacey Lippel’s classroom:

The door was pushed open – like the others, indicating Cruz shot inside – with a “No Bullying Zone” hanging inside. The creative writing assignment for the day was written on the whiteboard: “How to Write the Perfect Love Letter”.

The teacher’s desk is on the left, and students can be imagined huddling behind it. The desks were a mess, and some people were pushing each other as they rushed back indoors in the frenzy described in the testimony. A table was filled with enviable Valentine’s Day gifts – a large gift bag stuffed with tissues, a round box of purse candies and a heart-shaped box.

Walking down the hallway, dry, cracked rose petals mix with shards of glass, adding a cinematic feel to the scene. There was a large pool of blood in the middle of the third-floor corridor where Anthony Borges was injured. The sign above the fountain is a quote from Yoda from Star Wars: “Do it or don’t do it. Don’t try.”

Below the fountain, three large pools of dried blood mark where authorities dragged the bodies of Carla Lauren, Meadow Pollack and Joaquin Oliver. A faint trail of blood ran along the bodies of the girls, from the alcove where they fell to the ground after being shot. A pool of blood was observed in the niche where Pollack and Loughran died in 1249. After escaping down the hallway with the others huddled in the alcove with Ernie Rospilski, they were injured and they stayed there. Then Cruz came back and shot them again.

There is an unfinished chess match. A friend of Peter Yang’s testified that they were playing a game when the fire alarm went off.

Room 1250

Valentine’s Day balloons, petals, filled white bear.

One of the most disturbing sights is the alcove outside the bathroom where Joaquin Oliver died. There was a large pool of blood and holes for bullets fired at him at close range. From the first shot he was wounded, there was blood dripping into the alcove. But most of the blood came from when Cruz caught up with Oliver in the alcove and opened fire. We know from the evidence that Oliver was conscious after being shot. He can’t run away when others run away. He heard Cruz coming. He heard the gunshots of Pollack and Lorraine. He knew he was next. We know from testimony that he raised his hands to protect himself. The two bullets in the wall show how futile this attempt is. There was a lock of black hair on the floor, near where his body was.A corner of a heart-shaped paper Valentine’s Day decoration (probably a card) collapsed, presumably soaked with blood

Moving down the hall toward the west wall, bullets grazed the south wall, suggesting Cruz was targeting fleeing students rather than firing randomly in front of him.

We saw the corner in front of the stairwell where Peter Wang fell after being shot while running down the hallway. Walls are drawn as squares resembling search quadrants. It was stained with black blood and a yellow-green substance described in the testimony as brain substance. Pin-sized holes in the wall have circles drawn around them and are labeled “Segment D” and “Segment F.”

There were six bullet holes in the window where Wang died. Cruz tried to blow up the windows and shot the fleeing students.

Jaime Guttenberg was shot outside the stairwell but collapsed inside. There was almost no blood where she fell. The bullet never left her body.

In the teachers’ lounge, there are 4 bullet holes in the glass windows facing the 1300 building. Another window pane next to it has another bullet hole. These overlook the courtyard and the parking lot where students escape.

The poster next to the window glass reads:

“Typical or problematic?
