Tony-Winner AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ Introduces Encore Season 14

Encore’s Season 14 debut was on stage at The Maas from September 15th to October 2nd. “Not Wrongdoing” will be directed and choreographed by “Broadway Mayor” GERRY MCINTYRE, whose energetic choreography was last seen in The Encore in the Season 13 opener, Smokey Joe’s Café.

Not only is McIntyre a successful director and choreographer, his Broadway credits include magically colorful fantasy coats with PATTI LUPONE, Joseph and Donnie Osmond, and the original company that was once on the island .

A funky, sultry musical celebration of legendary jazz superstar FATS WALLER, Ain’t Misbehavin’ is one of the most popular and well-produced satires of all time and won the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical. It takes place when Manhattan nightclubs (like the Cotton Club) are the playgrounds of high society, while the Harlem dive zone is filled with piano players hitting new beats known as swing.

Five performers presented a night of vulgar, raunchy and humorous songs that encapsulated the mood of the era and reflected Waller’s view of life as a journey full of fun and play.

Taking the stage in this delightful production are Encore mainstays ARIELLE CROSBY and CHRIS JOSEPH. A Detroit native, Crosby has been taking the country by storm, last appearing to surprise the audience at The Encore’s Tribute: Diana Ross and the Supremes concert. Originally from Ann Arbor, Joseph recently thrilled the Encore audience with his performances at the Tribute: Stevie Wonder concert and last season’s hit Smokey Joe’s Café. Chris can also be heard singing in the local pop group “Accidentally Hip”. Encore Newcomer ELIZABETH ANN GREY, Musical Theatre Educator and Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, has performed in theaters and opera houses across the country, with renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Maestro Riccardo Multi, Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne and flutist Matthieu Dufour. Indiana native DANTE MURRAY (The Color Purple, Sister Act, Memphis), who recently performed at the opening of the Palladium Center for the Performing Arts under the direction of Michael Feinstein, also made his debut. Joining the cast is another rookie Encore actor/singer from Kentucky, TAMMIE HARRIS (The Wiz, The Little Mermaid, Chicago, Dreamgirls).

Playing alongside these top-notch performers are world-class jazz musicians assembled for The Encore by jazz saxophonist ALEX HARDING, funded by the ANN ARBOR Community Foundation Arts and Culture Committee. Encore mainstay, R. MACKENZIE LEWIS as music director. The production was generously sponsored by Dexter resident and passionate Encore supporter JAN LYONS.

It was founded 15 years ago by Broadway performers DAN COONEY and Chelsea, Michigan residents ANNE and PAUL KOCH to fill a void in the Ann Arbor area of high-quality professional music production.
